The Sea Sapphire


The sea sapphire is an ant-sized crustacean. Considered an anomaly to scientists due to their ability to blaze between brilliant shades of color and near-invisibility, scientists have discovered that their unique abilities are due to microscopic layers of crystal plates which are arranged in a honeycomb-like pattern in the skin cells of the copepods’ back, helping them to pull off the optical trick.
