Kelvin-Helmholtz Waves Clouds


Captured near Lake Tahoe at Diamond Peak in Incline Village, Nev., a unique formation of clouds create a scenic, dream-like view. Known as Kelvin-Helmholtz Waves, these clouds are caused by turbulence and a change in winds over a relatively short distance vertically.

The rolling eddies seen at the top of the cloud layers are usually evenly spaced and easily identifiable. The clouds are named for Lord Kelvin and Hermann von Helmholtz. These clouds are often good indicators of atmospheric instability and the presence of turbulence for aircraft.
